SEPTEMBER 2011

Greetings,

I hope your family had a wonderful summer. It's hard to imagine school has started and the Bears are off to yet another dismal start to the football season.

Recently, I was reminded of a catch-phrase I use now and then, which goes: "You can't do more unless you do less." The simple meaning of this is, in order to take on new or expanded responsibilities, you need to find a way to develop others in your organization to take on some of your current responsibilities. This usually proves to be very difficult as it is in human nature to define one's self by their job and the tactical value they deliver.

I was reminded of this by this month's lead article "My Story: Brian Halligan of HubSpot - HubSpot "fires" their best employees by training them and encouraging them to advance in their careers." While always easier said than done, I liked the simplicity of their innovation model
Alpha, Beta and Version One. At the heart of HubSpot's success with this model is their management's support of innovationrisk taking and tapping into employees' entrepreneurial interests. Maybe this model, or some form of it, could work well within your organization.

Speaking of innovation, the next i.c.stars Techbash is on November 15! Click here to learn more about this wonderful event and the success of i.c.stars' mission to develop future IT and business leaders.

Take care and have a wonderful fall season,

Real Urgency is an Essential Asset that Must be Created and Recreated
What does it take to not only win the hearts and souls of people to a needed change effort, but also how to channel that into creating transformations that stick? John Kotter was often asked: “What is the single biggest error people make when they try to change?” He concluded that there was not a high enough sense of urgency among enough people to set the stage for making a challenging leap in a new direction.

Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders
Book author, Rajeev Peshawaria, says ironically, even though leadership hasn’t changed, we have Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders. The difference between mere bosses and leaders is that “leaders find the energy to stay on and fight, and energize others around them, while nonleaders give up.”
